Morning comes quietly to Bowman Lake beneath a great gray wilderness of cloud. The mountains rise dark and solemn from the forest, their sharp summits wandering in and out of the mist, as though the storm had drawn a veil across all but their highest crags. A long white river of cloud drifts among the timbered slopes, wrapping itself around the ridges while the higher peaks stand dimly above it.

The lake lies wonderfully still beneath this mountain weather, gathering the whole scene into its dark, polished surface—forest, cloud, and broken summits repeated in wavering shadow. No brilliant sunrise announces the day; the coming light is softened and scattered through the clouds, revealing the mountains little by little.
